Growth form variable from a multi-stemmed semi-scandent shrub to a stand alone small tree that reaches up to (5-10 m). It often grows densely entangled with other plants, forming thick impenetrable thickets almost all the way to the ground. As a stand alone tree it has a rounded crown of which may equal or exceed its height.
Bark on young tree is smooth with light grey, in older trees the bark is dark grey, flakey with some transverse splitting.The stipules are large shield like with an ovate or triangular shape, up to 12 x 7 mm and are on both sides of the leaf petioles.
